2001 It has finally been raining a bit in the past few days. We received just under a half inch between Saturday and Sunday and I didn't check the rain gauge this morning but after last night and a bit this morning...it's got to be at least a 1/2".
May 17,
2001 I checked the rain gauge when I got home and it was over 1/2" of rain. Yay! If you listen hard enough you can hear the corn and the peas jumping up inches overnight from the water they desparately needed. I found out that I'm allergic to: Maple, Pecan, Oak, Ash, Elm, Sycamore, Pigweed, Ragweed and some kind of mold in the dirt. Plus cat, dog, dust mites and a food mold allergy. The Sunray Coreopsis has started blooming and next to the Delphinium's blue is the prettiest thing out there. The Penstemon's are also going gangbusters in the bloom department.
High of ?· predicted Pollen Count ? It rained on Sunday with the rain gauge reaching just under an inch. We have put in two new beds in the past two weekends. The one around the lampost that goes out and encompasses the Sugar Maple. A Dogwood now resides in that bed as well as various annuals and perennials. The newest bed is the one I've been wanting to do for so long now.
The shrub line with only one itty bitty shrub in it to the far left is what I call my shrubline. It now has much more in it including: Camellia sasanqua's, Forsythia, Winter Honeysuckle, Winter Jasmine, Itea, Red Prince Weigelia, and some Pines towards the road. Now, you can't see it from this photo but the Yoshino Cherry is in the front of the house, around that corner there, in it's own small bed. I wanted to take that bed, extend it out in an arc towards my shrubline and connect it TO the shrubline. Thereby making a little wee pocket of yard between the end of this big bed in the photo (my Herb Bed) and the arc'ed bed. Well it happened. And there is only a wee tiny little walkway of grass, enough to get the mower through between this herb bed and where the shrubline bed ends. I love it. We will eventually extend the shrubline bed all the way down to the Yando bed behind me in this picture. Making a little walklane. In the meantime. We planted the evergreen stuff in the bed that arcs between the Yoshino and the shrubline. I wanted privacy to put maybe a swing in there..or a picnic table or probably some nice comfy chairs. In the Arc Bed: 3 Needlepoint Hollies, 1 Nelly Stevens Holly as the centerpiece and 2 Eleagnus 'Silverberry'.... one on either side of the Nelly. I have GOT to get some dang pictures so I can do the before's and after's. I also picked up a Veronica 'Red Fox' for the Large Perennial Bed too. Gorgeous plant. Now. I'm out of time and gotta run. More storms forecasted for today and this evening.
High of 79· predicted Pollen Count 7.5 Oak, Hickory/Pecan and Grass After coming home from school the other night I noticed the shovel was out but didn't see right away what Stuart had been up to while I was gone. Matter of fact, I didn't even notice it until yesterday. I called him up from work and asked him, "hey. what did you do with the all the irises that were under the Japanese Maple?" I was hoping he didn't throw them out and he didn't. They are just in buckets out back, awaiting my everloving care in planting them. I had mentioned that I wanted to move them out from underneath the tree because they were obscuring the pretty structural elements of the tree trunks. And it does look so much better out there without them. The tree was becoming too large anyhow and shading them out. I have a Sedum 'Autumn Joy' on the other side of the tree that has to be moved because of this problem. The Annual Delphinium looks like it's wearing itself out. Maybe some fertilizer will perk it up. Or maybe I need to make a manure tea. I'd rather do that.
High of 79· predicted Pollen Count 7.7 Hickory/Pecan, Grass and Sorrel/Dock. Okay. It can stop raining any time now. I shouldn't complain because of the drought situation and they've said that June will be drier than usual but must we have it all at once? On a weekend? Why not during the week? It rained every day since Friday. Today it's been raining steady all morning and now it's afternoon. It did stop raining enough on Sunday that Stuart was able to put another bed in for me. AND another water garden. I'm thinking "bog garden" for this one. It's relatively shallow but I love where it's situated and I think it'll be a nice addition. ..... The news anchor was taling the other night about Hurricane season and said, "The Hurricane Season opens on June 1rst." heh. Like it's a sporting event or something. ..... I had the first produce of the year out of D.'s garden this past Sunday. So what did I do to it? Nice, fresh, tender squash? I deep fried it of course.
May 31,
2001 Gee. I might get to see the yard in DAYLIGHT today. Heh. I know, complain complain. It's been like, 4 days now since I've been able to get out and about in the yard due to rain and school at night. .....
Boy is THAT wrong from what WRAL weather is forecasting. We are supposed to have "possible showers tomorrow and possibly sever thunderstorms tomorrow night." ..... The daylilies have been blooming for about a week now in my herb bed and I finally got off my duff and planted some last summer that AREN'T orange or yellow. D. has plenty of different colors that's for sure. My favorite is a custardy-cream with a raspberry sauce band. Very striking. I've also been working on the picture section and the plant index for this section. |
