Abelia
Caprifoliaceae

Abelia 'Sunrise'
Abelia
Plant type: Shrub
Size: No larger than 4-5 feet across and  tall
Foliage:  Green edged with cream in spring and summer, edged in bright red in winter
Shape:  Mound
Location: Full sun; average soil
Growth rate: Very slow
Flower:

Notes: This is a cultivar that was discovered as a branch sport of Abelia x grandiflora at Taylor's Nursery in Raleigh North Carolina. It is very eye-catching in the landscape and it is well worth having at least one somewhere just for the pretty foliage. I plan on using a few of these in my large perennial bed as permanent 'bones'.

This is the foliage of 'Sunrise' Abelia.

'Edward Goucher' Abelia

It is a smaller shrub than the Grandiflora but larger than the 'Sunshine'Abelia.

I love this shrub for its bright red stems and twigs. The color tones down quite a bit in winter but in spring and summer when it is busy growing, it is just beautiful. This Abelia has pink flowers, trumpet shaped with frilly edges. The 'Sunrise' and grandiflora species both have white flowers.
